A new class of cells in fascia–termed fasciacytes–plays an important role in the production of hyaluronan. Levels of hyaluronan/hyaluronic acid have been found to facilitate or inhibit gliding between layers of deep fascia and muscle. Additionally, research has found that the extracellular matrix changes in response to hormone levels.
